There were only minor engagements, and poor weather, over the next three days. But there was further action on the morning of 5 October. Eleven Hurricanes took to the sky at 1115 in company with 253 Squadron. Ten Me109s, from 20,000 feet came down to meet them. Two of these fell to the Hurricanes’ guns and one was damaged. Poor weather curtailed any flying on 6 October. On the morning of 7 October approximately twelve Me109s were engaged north-west of Ashford, with one claimed shot down and Flying Officer Barry killed. That afternoon, with 605 Squadron, Me109s were again engaged, two claimed destroyed, one probable. Pilot Officer Mackenzie then found more Me109s and attacked from the rear. Damaging one Me109 he then, ‘forced it into the sea by ramming its tail with his wing tip.’ He was then attacked and with no ammunition all he could do was evade, force-landing badly shot-up just north of Folkestone. By now the German bombers were transferring their focus to night time. Me109s started to carry bombs in daylight, which Tony reckoned, ‘was most unfair. We RAF fighter pilots did not involve ourselves in bombs until later in the war.’
